Short procedural note by Phil dated 3.15.03 describing how he moved chapters of his Spectral Theory book from Palatino on the Mac to Times New Roman on the PC. He tried font substitution, then pasted chapter 3 into a new document with his normal style. He lists the fixes needed: broken symbols, equation-number tabs, page breaks and typos. He reports Chapter 6 went fine and plans to apply the method to all his books.

How to convert BTS books like Spectral Theory to standard current fonts 3.15.03
These chapters were originally done on the Mac, and there I used a font called Palatino. If I look in Tools/ Options/Compatibility, there is a font substitution list, and you can see that the PC is using Book Antigua for the Palatino. Can I change that to Times New Roman? Yes! I did this, made it permanent, then I selected all and set font size up from 10 to 11.
Now what? Document does not have my standard tabs. Nor do things like control-H work, because it does not have my normal.dot normal style.
Let's try a different approach. Let's create a new blank document that knows about my current normal style, then let's paste the whole of chapter 3 into this document. Looks very good! All the text has assumed my current style with 11 point Times, and my tabs, etc. However, I think I had better browse and see what things are hammered.
1. The symbol is appearing as some null set type symbol, I have to fix each occurrence. I was able to do a global replace using the normal replace tool, but I had to cut and paste the desired symbols.
2. the symbol appears as a plus sign, I have to fix it. Not many of these.
3. The equation numbers need to be tabbed into alignment.
4. The implies symbol appears as a box.
5. I centered some of the pictures. They converted amazingly well I think.
6. Then I have to worry about page breaks and how things divide up onto pages.
7. Fix accumulated typos marked up in red on hard copy.
Done. My full edit on this 27 page chapter took about half an hour.
So, I will eventually apply this method to all chapters of all the books! Then they will be maintainable once more!
Note: I just did Chapter 6 using the same method, it went OK.
