A brief personal note dated 10.25.06 in which Phil, then age 58, weighs how many self-study courses to take on at once. Candidates include reviewing a biology textbook (Campbell), geology, Roman history, an art book, music history and opera, piano sight-reading of Mozart sonatas, a daily exercise program, independent physics research, and foreign language study.

Courses PhL 10.25.06 I am not sure how many "courses" to do at once. Doing only one course at a time would probably be tedious, whereas doing 20 courses at once would be spreading things too thin. Perhaps the college model suggests that the number should be in the 3-6 range. At age 58, time is running out on some of these subjects. So here are some candidate self-taught "courses" I am thinking about. 4 1) reviewing the entire Campbell 1990 book, maybe getting a more current one. This would be just to get back into the flow of things in the biology world. My first reading of Campbell was August-October of 2002, which is 4 long years ago. The 1990 book is now 16 years ago, that is a long time in the biology research world! I would be willing to just buy the current book. After this review, I would try to read some of the other bio books I have, or try to get directly into some kind of "research" such as MS. 2) review the geology readings I have already done, then read the Utah geology book recently acquired. 3) start into the history of Rome with all the APL books that are accumulated. 4) review Sister Wendy's art book, then continue in that book and try to get to the end. 5) start readings in music history from various books I have collected on that subject. Part of this would be taking a look at the subject of opera, about which I know nothing at all. 6) do piano music sight-reading, such as the rest of the Mozart sonatas, I have done 3 so far. 7) Athletic course requiring daily exercises of a non-violent nature and measurements. The idea here is to be your own "personal trainer" and get things going. 8) Physics research, ask some good questions and pursue them where they lead, no requirement to do what someone else wants you do to. This is the self-funded research idea that I have been working toward. 9) Language study: Spanish, French, German, Greek, Russian, Italian, pick one or more!
